The great thing about the Borderlands anthologies is that they really do push the horror and dark fantasy genre into something far more than ghost stories, hauntings, and vampires. To quote Mr. Monteleone from the introduction of Borderlands 1, "I wanted writers to expand the envelope, to look beyond the usual metaphors, and bring me something new."
F. Paul Wilson has definitely done this with "Foet".
This little ten page short story is the first story in the Borderlands 2 horror anthology.
Written simply and straight forward, almost like a journal; for the pure effect of making it real.
This is a terrifyingly imaginative and ultimately thought provoking bunch of words.
The main character is a woman named Denise and she has a friend named Helene that she runs into while out and about in New York City enjoying her favorite pastime, shopping; for what ends up to be a very unique item. That is about all I want to reveal as far as the story goes because it needs to be read firsthand without any commentary for full effect. This story is that good, that memorable.
I believe this is an important little story because it brings forth how the pawns of the heart can work their way to checkmate the logic of the brain. How social inclusion has exclusive demands, and this need to be similar is tied with objects of unimaginable origin. A story of opposing values and see-saw mentality that is incredibly human, very very human.
